Concert: chamber music from Mozart to the present

Sat., Nov. 17 at 7:00 PM at The Unitarian Universalist Church of Fresno. The music will include original compositions by John Kilburn and Barbara Ulman, as well as Tchaikovsky, Carl Maria von Weber, Taktakishvili, Mozart, and more.

Three Fresno musicians will join three musicians from the foothills for this varied and interesting concert.  The audience will have an opportunity to hear works by well- known composers, as well as new music by two mountain area composers who have degrees in composition.

John Kilburn has composed works for small ensembles and full orchestras, as well as music for modern dance and films.  He won an award for his score of "Living Death Valley." He has taught Digital Audio classes at the University of Sound Arts in Hollywood and has done consulting for major studios, including Lorimar Pictures.

Barbara Ulman has specialized in writing art songs and choral music.  Some of her works have been performed on the East Coast, as well as in California. Some of her art songs have been described by by Brad Hufft, Orpheus Executive Director, as "contemporary in nature, yet accessible and witty."

Besides music by Ulman and Kilburn, the program will include a Mozart sonata for piano four-hands; the slow movement from von Weber’s Trio for Flute, Cello, and Piano; Taktakishvili’s  dramatic Flute Sonata;  Tchaikovsky’s piano solo “Romance” followed by the 50’s song “Always You,” which uses melodies from it -- and other compositions.

The  Fresno musicians are David Fox, cello and piano; Jennifer Lewis, mezzo soprano; and David Lorey, flute.  The mountain area performers are Christel Biasell, soprano; John Kilburn, guitar; and Barbara Ulman, piano.

The Unitarian Universalist Church of Fresno is at 2672 E. Alluvial Ave. (between Willow and Chestnut) in Clovis
