Interval Studies Performed

Pianist Alan Rea performed my twelve Interval Studies to an enthusiastic audience at the Fresno Musical Club meeting on Jan. 7, 2015.  People found humor and interest in them and encouraged me to get them published -- on paper. The videos of them on my website illustrate the notation in an intriguing way.  (see the Instrumental Music link on barbaraulman.com)

I will be playing the piano in a concert with violinist/violist Henry Plotkin.  Besides Handel, Schubert, Beethoven, and Massenet, we'll play one of my earliest pieces, "Reverie," which I've just arranged for viola and piano.  On MusicaNeo the same piece is played on clarinet and piano; also available: the original solo piano score and an arrangement for wind quintet. At the concert, in addition to our duets, I'll play some short piano solos by  Debussy, Grieg, and Prokofiev.

Piano teachers and voice teachers: check this out!

My 12 Interval Studies for Piano are for ear training, finger training, and voice training.  Anyone who can play the piano moderately well can play them and benefit from them.  Not just an exercise, these are short compositions which feature one interval at a time.  Practicing each hand alone will help one hear and feel the intervals. Recently I went through all the scores and edited them to make them easier to read and play.  The audio of each one is now available on MusicaNeo. ...

All 12 Interval Studies now in videos on YouTube

Each study is visualized differently, to illustrate the voice leading of each.  John Kilburn spent hours creating the videos, which illuminate the separation of the two hands as the music is played. Watching the videos helps one concentrate on the sound of the different intervals.

Sierra Foothill Composers' Co-operative in concert

On March 23, I was one of four composers whose works were performed in a well-attended concert in Oakhurst, CA.  My four songs for soprano and piano were well received. The concert included music by Bach, Mozart, Debussy, and Fauré as well as pieces composed by the four founding members of the group: Brad Hufft, John Kilburn, Susan Moore, and me.  The music was for various combinations of harp, flute, cello, English horn, piano, guitar, and voice, with nine performers.
